What Is Trench Dubstep? Artists and Tracks to Start With
Trench is Infekt’s word for OG riddim codes, not melodic colour variants. Start with that definition, then dig SoundCloud and the history piece.
Table of contents
Trench is a word pushed by the German producer Infekt. In this magazine’s subgenre map (page updated 14 July 2026), it means OG riddim: the original codes of that style, not the later melodic or colour variants. It is not a separate BPM lane and it is not a synonym for tearout.
The definition we actually use
Riddim is what we call a prominent style in our editorial coverage in 2026: 140 BPM writing, simple structure, half-time weight. Trench sits inside that family as a taste for the older grammar. Melodic riddim opens the loop with a few notes. Colour bass goes melodic and accessible via the Rushdown lane. Liquid riddim stays calm and underground. Trench points the other way: back toward the early riddim codes Infekt argued for.
UKF’s 2017 Infekt interview is linked from our long history piece. Infekt described riddim’s energy as flow rather than tear-out-in-your-face. Read that thread in /news/history-of-dubstep/ instead of treating a paraphrase as a new 2026 quote. The French history twin is /news/lhistoire-du-dubstep/.
Tearout, by contrast, is the harder, more chaotic end of festival dubstep. Keep it separate. If a festival edit is only “dark and loud,” that alone does not make it trench.

Artists and entry points we can name without inventing a canon
We do not publish a fake “best trench tracks of 2026” list. What we can print:
Infekt is the name attached to the word. At Lost Lands 2026 (18-20 September, Legend Valley, Thornville, Ohio) the EDM.com review named an INFEKT b2b Samplifire set among the special pairings. That is evidence that INFEKT performed at the festival. It is not a trench discography.
SampliFire’s path on this site runs through older Disciple news and production notes, plus that Lost Lands b2b as 2026 international proof. Links: /news/samplifire-le-francais-signe-son-entree-chez-disciple-et-sort-son-premier-ep/ (archive signing, not 2026 news) and /news/5-tips-for-getting-started-with-production-by-samplifire/.
For the heavy festival end that people sometimes mislabel as trench, point at Svdden Death’s month page: /artistes-dubstep/artiste-du-mois-mars-2026-svdden-death/. That is tearout-adjacent festival weight in our filing, not a trench starter pack.
Classic UK entry points still work as ear training for half-time and space, even when they predate the trench label: Skream “Midnight Request Line,” Benga and Coki “Night,” Rusko “Cockney Thug,” Mala “Anti War Dub.” They are not trench tracks. They teach the pocket trench producers still argue about.
Where to dig without a store aisle
SoundCloud remains the practical dig for OG-leaning riddim and liquid riddim. Use:
Sort by recent, skip thirty-second teasers, and listen past the first drop before you save anything. Beatport’s Dubstep top 100 mixes riddim, melodic bass, and festival dubstep in one bucket. It will not hand you a trench shelf.
YouTube promo channels UKF Dubstep and DubstepGutter help you hear current festival uploads. Search UKF Dubstep and DubstepGutter. UKF the site stays at ukf.com. Those channels are not a trench curriculum.
How to tell you found the right lane
If the track feels like simple 140 half-time with OG riddim codes and little melodic colour-bass gloss, you are in the trench neighbourhood this magazine means. If it stacks festival chaos, vocal chops every bar, and tearout density, you left trench even if the title tags say otherwise. If it is calm and underground, you may have landed in liquid riddim instead. All three can share a 140 write tempo. The arrangement tells you which door you opened.
A common starting point is 140 BPM, with some contemporary tracks around 150 BPM. The snare on beat 3 is why the body hears a 70 BPM pulse. Half-time is that feel, not a second genre. Trench does not change the math. It changes which ornaments you keep out of the loop. Melodic riddim adds a few notes. Colour bass, popularised by Rushdown, goes further into accessible melody. Chillstep is a calmer YouTube lane, largely off the main club scene. None of those replace trench; they sit on other shelves of the same glossary page.
If you came from brostep (Skrillex-era roughly 2011-2014), trench will feel narrower and less shiny. If you came from festival tearout, trench will feel almost polite until the sub hits. Both reactions are useful. They tell you which habit you brought into the dig.
